Chapter Eleven

“It’s settled then. You boys will run the O’Malley Clan set for us here in this neighborhood,” Collin proclaimed, standing from his chair to leave.

“Wait a damn minute,” Liam protested, stepping around the table.

Brendan stood as well, grabbing Liam’s elbow to stop him. “Liam, chill out.”

“Hell no, Bren, we aren’t in some goddamn Mob.”

“Tell him, boy,” Collin warned.

Brendan sighed. He needed to tell his brothers about what his deal entailed. He just didn’t know how.

“This was your deal?” Rory asked, his mouth gaped wide. “For us to become fucking mobsters!”

Brendan shook his head. He knew his brothers would react this way. It was part of the reason why he negotiated with Collin until he agreed to only let Brendan into the family. Of course, his brothers would always be connected to the O’Malley Clan, regardless if they wanted to be or not. Those tats on their arms and their father’s link would always be there.

“No, not you two.” He pierced his brothers with his gaze, and something washed over him. Brendan was resolute in his decision. It was no longer about owing Collin anymore. Perhaps it never was. He felt like this was what he was supposed to be doing. Feeling like the black sheep of the family. Fighting with Liam all the time. The anger. The underground brawls. Somehow, he felt as if all of it was leading up to this one moment when he finally found and accepted who he really was. “Just me. I’ve agreed to head the family here.” Brendan moved to the head of the table as his brothers’ gazes followed him, and he sat in the chair Collin just vacated. “I’d like your support.”

His brothers were quiet for a moment, then Liam stood, storming out of the room. Collin and his men followed him, leaving just Brendan and Rory in the room.

Rory sighed. “Brendan, there has to be another way. There is no way Uncle Connor would agree to this.”

“Rory, I know you’re trying to be the peacemaker like you always are, but I’m an adult. I made the decision to do this. If not for Collin agreeing to come to the States and save my ass from the Cambridge Street Crew, I might have ended up dead.” Brendan paused, letting that bit sink in. “Besides, this was Dad’s legacy. He came here to build the family, and let’s face it, I’m not like you and Liam. I’m not a business owner or a money genius like Liam.”

Brendan moved to his brother, leaning against the edge of the conference table. “I was hoping you two would come help me out. At least with the finance part. I don’t want a crime organization. I want legitimate businesses. Not the shit Cambridge Street does. I want the O’Malley Clan here in the States to flourish.”

He wasn’t one for big speeches, but he saw an opportunity to put his mark on this city and for the reputation of the Mob to be something different. He’d really hoped his brothers would see it his way and come aboard.
